Danushka Gunathilaka, a Sri Lankan international cricketer, has been charged with the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
The alleged attack took place just a few hours after the couple had met for the first time on their date.
According to the New South Wales police, the cricketer, who is in Australia for the T20 World Cup, and the woman, who is 29, had their initial contact with one another via a dating app over the weekend.
According to the police, after exchanging a number of texts and phone conversations, the two went on a date on Wednesday and then returned to the woman’s residence in Rose Bay afterward.
There are allegations that Gunathilaka assaulted her several times over the course of a number of hours at the location in question.
After receiving complaints of the alleged assault on Saturday, detectives began their investigation into the incident and early on Sunday morning, the batsman, who is 31 years old, was arrested at his hotel on Sussex Street, which is located in the central business district of Sydney.
He was accused with four counts of engaging in sexual activity without the consent of the other party and bail was denied for him. On Monday, he is scheduled to make an appearance in the Waverley municipal court.
According to the commander of the sexual crimes squad in NSW, Jayne Doherty, the woman took precautions to ensure her safety before meeting the man in person. These precautions included talking with the man online for several days before meeting in person and going on a date in a public place.
Gunathilaka was a member of Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 World Cup team and traveled to Australia with them. However, he was only able to participate in the team’s first game, which was a loss to Namibia, before suffering a hamstring rupture and was forced to withdraw from the competition.
The allegations were brought to Sri Lanka Cricket’s attention, and the organization stated in a statement that it will keep a careful eye on the proceedings of the court.
According to the statement, “We will quickly launch a full investigation into the situation and take serious punishment against the player if they are found guilty.” This would be done in cooperation with the International Cricket Council.
Gunathilaka is a left-handed batsman who has represented Sri Lanka in approximately one hundred twenty-minute and one-day international matches, in addition to a handful of tests.
